Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ’s Received by our Durable Medical Equipment Coordinator

What is Durable Medical Equipment?

Durable Medical Equipment or DME is equipment used specifically for a medical purpose. It must be able to withstand repeated use and is generally not useful to a person in the absence of illness or injury.

What types of DME are available to VOS patients?

We provide a wide array of braces and splints to our patients as part of our global care. In addition to our basic hand, knee and ankle braces we also have the capability to provide custom ACL braces as well as custom knee osteoarthritis unloader braces. Unfortunately we do not carry wheelchairs or mobility devices but your physician can give you a prescription for these items that can be filled at any medical supply company.

Will my insurance cover DME?

Insurance benefits vary and not all services/products are a covered benefit in all contracts. While there is no co-pay associated with receiving DME it may be subject to coinsurance rates and/or deductibles. You may wish to contact your insurance company directly to inquire about your coverage.

What is the return policy for DME?

All medical supplies including braces and splints are considered single-use items and are meant for one individual. OSHA requires that we do not accept these products back from patients unless it is a replacement for a faulty/defective item.

The appointment takes about a ½ hour.

Who sets up rehab for post op joint replacement patients?

It is the patients responsibility to choose a facility. Once a decision has been made as to where you will have your rehab you should notify the Continuing Care Department at Griffin Hospital they will help in finalizing your post op care.
